Will GTA 6 have mods? Not at launch, because it launches only on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and consoles don’t run mods. But Rockstar has already written the rules those mods will live under. On September 10, 2026 it published its first official Mod Guidelines, and they apply to every Rockstar game, GTA 6 included once it reaches PC.

For twenty years GTA modding ran on an unwritten deal: Rockstar looked the other way as long as nobody got too greedy. Now the deal is on paper.

What the Mod Guidelines say

The page sorts mods into two kinds under the Rockstar Games terms of service: “Custom Content” and “UGC”. It then sets four groups of limits:

What’s banned

Three rules matter most for GTA 6:

Rule What it means
No unofficial ports Games can’t be modified to run on consoles or devices Rockstar didn’t release them on
Multiplayer through Rockstar Multiplayer modding only on Rockstar’s licensed Creator Platform or platforms it licenses
No paid mods on the side Monetisation outside the Creator Platform is out

The page doesn’t ban single-player modding. It draws the lines around it: keep it free, keep it in the game it came from, and leave the canon alone.

Can you mod GTA 6 on PS5 or Xbox?

No. Console games don’t accept mods, and the new rules explicitly ban hacking a game onto hardware it wasn’t released for. GTA 6 mods will start with the PC version, and the PC version still has no date. If Rockstar follows GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, that means a wait of more than a year.

Where multiplayer mods will live

The “licensed Creator Platform” isn’t named on the page, but Rockstar already owns one. In 2023 it bought Cfx.re, the team behind the FiveM and RedM roleplay platforms, and in February 2026 alt:V, the main competing framework, was told to shut down. The rumoured next step is Rockstar’s own UGC platform, which we follow as Project ROME. The new rules fit that picture: one door for multiplayer and one till for money.

Why now

The guidelines don’t mention GTA 6 or a PC version. Fans connected the dots anyway: a ban on ports and a single door for multiplayer arrive two months before the biggest release in years, and some read it as a sign the PC version is closer than expected. My reading is simpler. The porting clause protects a game that for now exists only on PS5 and Xbox, and the monetisation clause protects a marketplace Rockstar already runs. Whenever GTA 6 reaches PC, modders will find the rules waiting.

FAQ

Will GTA 6 have mods?
Not at launch: GTA 6 comes out on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026, and consoles don’t run mods. Mods are expected with the PC version, which has no release date yet.

Are paid mods allowed?
Not on your own. Rockstar’s Mod Guidelines ban charging for access to Rockstar’s assets or missions and any monetisation outside its licensed Creator Platform.

Can I make a multiplayer mod or roleplay server?
Only through Rockstar’s licensed Creator Platform or platforms it licenses. Today that means Cfx.re’s FiveM and RedM, which Rockstar owns.

Can mods bring GTA 6 to other consoles or PC early?
No. The guidelines ban modifying Rockstar games to run on consoles or devices they weren’t released on.
