PS Plus and Game Pass for GTA 6

Here’s a rare sentence for 2026: to play the biggest game of the decade, you don’t need a single subscription. Buy GTA 6, download it, play it. Done.
The reason is simple and comes straight from Take-Two’s September shareholder meeting: GTA 6 launches as a single-player game, and the company will keep supporting the current GTA Online — the one attached to GTA V — after launch. Console subscriptions like PS Plus Essential and Game Pass Essential (the tier formerly called Core) exist to unlock online multiplayer. No online mode at launch means no gate to pay at.
So what is PS Plus for, then
If you already pay for PS Plus or Game Pass for other games, nothing changes — keep it, it just won’t touch GTA 6. If you were about to subscribe “to get ready”, save the money. There’s genuinely nothing to get ready for: story mode needs the game and a console, full stop.
The question comes back the day a GTA 6 online mode appears. A Twitch executive said in an interview he expects it in 2027, which is a guess from a well-placed person, not a date. When it lands, online play on consoles will almost certainly want a subscription, the way GTA Online does today. That’s a bridge to cross in a year, not in November. And by the way, one month of subscription money saved covers a good chunk of the story DLC we’re all quietly hoping for.
And Game Pass?
GTA 6 isn’t in Game Pass, isn’t in the PS Plus catalog, and nothing suggests that changes around launch. I’d be shocked if it did. Take-Two spent over a decade on this game; day-one subscription deals are for publishers who need the exposure, and this is the one game on Earth that doesn’t. GTA V did eventually visit Game Pass — years after release, once the sales curve had flattened. If history repeats, GTA 6 in a subscription is a conversation for the 2030s.
One more thing, because the names confuse people every single time: GTA+ is a different animal. That’s Rockstar’s own subscription for GTA Online perks, it has nothing to do with PS Plus, and the digital pre-order of GTA 6 throws in a free month of it. What that month is worth and how to keep it from auto-renewing is its own article.
The short version stands: November 19, one purchase, zero subscriptions. Vice City doesn’t ask for a monthly fee. Yet.
FAQ
Do I need PS Plus to play GTA 6?
Not at launch. GTA 6 ships as a single-player game, and console subscriptions are only required for online multiplayer. When a GTA 6 online mode eventually arrives, that’s when a subscription will likely enter the picture.
Is GTA 6 coming to Game Pass?
There’s no sign of it. The game isn’t in the Game Pass or PS Plus catalogs, and nothing about adding it has been announced. Take-Two sells its biggest game at full price.
Should I buy a subscription before November 19?
Not for GTA 6. Buy the game, skip the subscription, and revisit the question when an online mode gets a date.
