Short answer: if a PS5 or an Xbox Series X is already under your TV, you’re done. Don’t spend a cent. I’ve been asked this question about five times since Trailer 3, and every time the honest answer is boring: the console you own will run GTA 6 on day one.

Already own a PS5 or Series X

Keep it. In August the head of Rockstar North, Rob Nelson, said current builds run at 30 fps on consoles, and that a 60 fps mode is a question for the tech team. That means the base PS5 and the Series X get the same game. The Extended Look footage was captured on a base PS5 — 4K upscaled from 1440p, and it’s the best-looking open world I’ve seen in my eleven years of doing real-time graphics for a living. Upgrading a working console for this game buys you almost nothing.

Buying a console from scratch

Take the PS5 Digital Edition and pocket the difference. Here’s the detail most people miss: the boxed GTA 6 has no disc inside, just a download code. A disc drive gives you nothing for this game. Fifty euros saved is a controller, or most of the Ultimate Edition upgrade.

If your friends are on Xbox, buy the Series X and don’t overthink it. Cross-play hasn’t been announced, so the platform your people play on matters more than any spec sheet.

PS5 Pro: worth it?

The store page carries a “PS5 Pro Enhanced” label, and that’s genuinely all we know. Resolution, PSSR upscaling, ray tracing, a steadier frame rate — Sony hasn’t said which of those the label means. As a tech artist I’d bet on sharper image quality rather than extra frames, but that’s a bet, not a fact.

What is a fact: the Pro is sold out at major US retailers, and scalpers want $1,300 and up. Paying a scalper for an undisclosed improvement is the worst deal in this whole article. Wait for the side-by-side comparisons after November 19, then decide with real footage in front of you.

Series S: the cheap seat

It runs the game, it’s the cheapest way in, and by all accounts it will be the most trimmed-down version — lower resolution, and only about 364 GB of usable storage out of the box. GTA 6 has no official install size, but the estimates floating around are big enough that on a 512 GB Series S it would live almost alone. If the S is what the budget allows, you’ll still be driving through Vice City on launch night. Just know what you’re buying.

PS4, Xbox One and PC

GTA 6 isn’t coming to PS4 or Xbox One. And there’s no PC version to plan for yet: at the September shareholder meeting Take-Two’s Strauss Zelnick called PC increasingly important for the company and stopped exactly there. GTA V took about 19 months to reach PC, RDR2 about 13. Upgrading a gaming PC “for GTA 6” right now means upgrading for a game with no requirements and no date. Your money can wait.

Whatever box you pick, on the evening of November 19 we’re all looking at the same neon skyline. I’ll be on a base PS5, and I don’t feel like I’m missing a thing.
