GTA 6 File Size and SSD

Somewhere in Rockstar’s office there’s a person who knows exactly how many gigabytes Vice City weighs, and they’re not telling. No store page lists a size, no press release mentions one. So the honest answer is a range: the estimates worth taking seriously sit between 150 and 200 GB, and the number I keep seeing from people who track these things is “just under 200”. Clear 200 GB and sleep well. The 677 GB and 750 GB screenshots that went viral are fakes — nobody has ever named a source for them.
For scale: GTA V in its current-gen version takes about 87 GB on PS5 and about 94 GB on Xbox. Rockstar doubling that for a game of this size wouldn’t surprise me at all. A whole Leonida at this level of detail has to live somewhere.
Will it fit on your console
| Console | Storage | Roughly free out of the box | 200 GB fits? |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 (2020, 825 GB) | 825 GB | ~667 GB | Yes, if the drive isn’t stuffed |
| PS5 Slim | 1 TB | ~850 GB | Yes |
| PS5 Pro | 2 TB | ~1.8 TB | Yes, with room for years |
| Xbox Series X | 1 TB | ~800 GB | Yes |
| Xbox Series S | 512 GB | ~364 GB | Tight — it’s over half the drive |
| Xbox Series S | 1 TB | ~850 GB | Yes |
Will GTA 6 fit on your drive?
Your console
- Already used
- GTA 6: 150 GB
- if it reaches 200 GB
- Left over
Fits with room to spare.
Free up some space or add a compatible SSD: M.2 on PS5, an expansion card on Xbox.
Estimate: there is no official size yet. The calculation uses 150–200 GB.
One consolation for Series S owners: Microsoft says installs on the S run roughly 30% smaller than on the X, because the console ships lower-resolution assets. That’s a platform-wide fact, not a GTA 6 promise, but it softens the math a little.
Who actually needs an SSD
Be honest about one thing first: how full is your drive today? Press the storage screen, look at the number, then decide. My original 825 GB PS5 lives in a permanent state of “delete something to install something”, and I know I’m not alone.
You’ll want more space if you have an 825 GB PS5 with a big library, or a 512 GB Series S. You won’t if you own a Pro, a 1 TB console, or you’re fine uninstalling two or three big games for the winter. Let’s be real — from November 19 onward, what else are you playing?
On PS5 the rules are strict: the game runs from the internal drive or from an M.2 NVMe SSD you install yourself. Sony wants PCIe Gen4, read speeds from 5,500 MB/s, and a heatsink. Installing one is a five-minute job with one screw, and I say that as someone who is much better with shaders than with screwdrivers.
On Xbox Series there’s no DIY: Series games run from the internal SSD or from a Storage Expansion Card (Seagate or WD) that clicks into the back slot. Costs more per gigabyte, takes three seconds to install.
Either way, a regular USB drive is a warehouse, not a stage. It can hold GTA 6 while you play something else, but the game will only launch from proper current-gen storage.
One thing about timing
Memory prices are climbing. Microsoft said in June that storage components had gotten over 2.5 times more expensive, and that it expects another doubling by fall 2027. I’m not telling you to panic-buy a drive today. I’m telling you that if the storage screen already makes you wince, waiting won’t make the upgrade cheaper.
Check your free space this week, not on launch night. Preload opens November 12, and the worst place to discover you’re 40 GB short is a download queue with the whole city waiting on the other side.
FAQ
How many GB is GTA 6?
Rockstar hasn’t published an install size. Community and press estimates cluster around 150–200 GB. The viral 677 GB and 750 GB figures are fakes with no source behind them.
Do I need to buy an SSD for GTA 6?
Only if your drive is already nearly full. A PS5 Pro or a 1 TB console with a tidy library fits the game without help. An original 825 GB PS5 packed with games, or a 512 GB Series S, is where an upgrade starts making sense.
Can I play GTA 6 from an external USB drive?
No. On both PS5 and Xbox Series, current-gen games only run from the internal SSD or an approved expansion (M.2 for PS5, Storage Expansion Card for Xbox). A USB drive can store the game, not run it.
