Quick answer. GTA 6 preload opens on November 12, 2026 for anyone who has pre-ordered on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S — a full week before the game unlocks at midnight local time on November 19. The install size is the big unknown; the informed guess is 150 GB or more, since Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA V both landed around 100 GB. You do not need to buy an SSD — every PS5 and Series X|S already has one. The physical edition is a download code in a box, so it preloads exactly like a digital pre-order.
When does preload start?
November 12 is Rockstar’s own date. The studio announced it in June 2026 alongside pre-orders: boxed copies go on sale that day specifically so buyers can start preloading, which puts the window at seven days — the same length Rockstar gave RDR2. What has not been published is the hour. It will show up on the store page once the window opens, and the place to watch is your console’s library: the download becomes available there, not through a separate app.
The game itself unlocks at midnight local time on November 19 in every time zone, which means New Zealand plays first and the west coast of the United States plays last. The full country-by-country schedule is in GTA 6 release time by country. If you are tempted to switch your console’s region to get in early, Early access via region unlock covers what actually works and what risks your account.
How many GB is GTA 6?
The honest answer is that the install size is the one number everyone is waiting on. Journalists expect at least 150 GB, and the reasoning is simple: RDR2 shipped at just over 100 GB, GTA V grew to roughly 100 GB with Online, and GTA 6 has a bigger map, higher-resolution assets and a version enhanced for PS5 Pro. Somewhere between 150 and 200 GB is the working assumption; the store page will settle it the day preload opens.
What that means in practice: on a base PS5 with its 667 GB of usable space, or a Series S with 364 GB, a 150 GB install is a serious chunk. Clear room a week ahead rather than the night before — deleting one or two large games is usually enough — and remember that a day-one patch on top of the preload is normal for Rockstar.
Do you need an SSD?
On console the question answers itself. Every PS5 and every Xbox Series X|S has a built-in SSD, and GTA 6 launches only on those two platforms. There is nothing to buy and nothing to check.
If you use an external drive for storage, note that PS5 games run only from the internal SSD or an approved M.2 expansion — an external USB drive can hold the install but the game has to move to internal storage to play. On Xbox the equivalent is the official storage expansion card. An SSD requirement will become a real question only for the PC version; PC requirements tracks what is known there.
Can you preload the physical edition?
Yes, and this is the detail that surprises people. The boxed edition of GTA 6 contains a download code, not a disc — the full picture is in Region lock and the no-disc edition. The boxes hit stores on November 12, the day preload opens, precisely so that buyers can redeem the code and download in time for launch. Once the code is redeemed, the game sits in your library like any digital purchase and preloads the same way.
The catch is timing: if you buy the box on November 18 and only then start a 150 GB download, launch night becomes a waiting game. Buy early, redeem early.
How to set up preload on PS5 and Xbox
PS5. Once the window opens, the game appears in your Game Library with a Download button — pre-ordered titles show up there automatically. To let the console handle it while you sleep, go to Settings → Saved Data and Game/App Settings → Automatic Updates and turn on automatic downloads; the console needs to be in Rest Mode with “Stay Connected to the Internet” enabled. On launch night the game unlocks at midnight without a further download, apart from the usual day-one patch.
Xbox Series X|S. Pre-orders land in My Games & Apps under Ready to Install. Enable “Keep my games & apps up to date” in Settings → System → Updates, and set the power mode to Sleep so downloads run in the background. On November 19 the game unlocks in place.
Either platform. Make space a week ahead, keep the console connected overnight, and check the release time for your country so you know exactly when the unlock hits.
Which edition should you preload?
Preload works the same for both editions; the difference is what is in the download. The Standard Edition is $79.99. The Ultimate Edition is $99.99 and adds the Paradise Garage, a monster truck and the PTT Youngin$ compound raid, among other extras. Pre-ordering either edition before launch also unlocks the Vintage Vice City Pack. The full breakdown, including what each pack contains, is in GTA 6 editions explained.
FAQ
When does GTA 6 preload start? November 12, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S pre-orders — one week before the November 19 release, and the same day boxed copies go on sale. The exact hour will appear on the store page when the window opens.
How many GB will GTA 6 take up? Journalists expect 150 GB or more. RDR2 and GTA V were both around 100 GB, and GTA 6 has a larger map and higher-resolution assets. The store page will show the exact figure when preload opens.
Do I need an SSD for GTA 6? On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S the SSD is built in, so there is nothing to buy. An SSD requirement will only matter for the PC version.
Can I preload the physical edition of GTA 6? Yes. The box contains a download code rather than a disc; redeem it and the game preloads like a digital copy. Boxes are in stores from November 12.
What time does GTA 6 unlock? Midnight local time on November 19, 2026, in every time zone — New Zealand first. See the release time by country page for your exact hour.
Will GTA 6 have a day-one patch? Rockstar’s recent launches all had one, so expect an update on top of the preload. There is a known candidate for it, too: after the extended gameplay showcase, Rob Nelson said a 60 fps option is still with the tech team and could land at launch or later. Leave a little extra space beyond the install size.
