GTA 6 now has its American age rating: M for Mature 17+ from the ESRB, the board that rates games in the US and Canada. The badge showed up on the game’s PlayStation Store page, right under the November 19 release date, with seven content descriptors next to it. Put that list next to GTA V’s and it’s the same seven, word for word.
What the ESRB listed
The rating panel reads: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol. Under it there’s a separate line, In-Game Purchases, which the ESRB files as an interactive element rather than content. The store page also marks in-game purchases as optional.
Each descriptor has a fixed meaning in the board’s own glossary. Here’s what they say, in short:
| Descriptor | What the ESRB means by it |
|---|---|
| Blood and Gore | Blood, or the mutilation of body parts |
| Intense Violence | Graphic, realistic-looking fights, with weapons, injury and death |
| Mature Humor | Jokes aimed at adults, sexual references included |
| Nudity | Graphic or prolonged nudity |
| Strong Language | Explicit or frequent swearing |
| Strong Sexual Content | Explicit or frequent sexual behaviour, possibly with nudity |
| Use of Drugs and Alcohol | Characters take illegal drugs or drink |
| In-Game Purchases | You can spend real money inside the game |
What it means for you
M isn’t a ban, it’s advice. The ESRB says 17 and up, and in practice the letter works like this:
- big US stores usually ask for ID before selling an M game to a teenager;
- PlayStation and Xbox family settings can block games by rating, so a child account set below M won’t launch GTA 6;
- for everyone 17 and older the rating changes nothing at all.
The rating also says what isn’t in the box. Nothing on the list points to anything beyond GTA V. The ESRB has a stricter letter, AO for Adults Only, and the console stores don’t sell AO games. GTA 6 isn’t anywhere near it.
Same list as GTA V
I pulled up GTA V’s ESRB entry, and it carries the exact same seven descriptors. In GTA V that list covered the strip club, the torture mission, the radio hosts and a lot of swearing in cars. So when someone reads “Strong Sexual Content” as a promise of something new, I don’t buy it. It’s the same box the series has ticked for years.
Every main GTA since GTA III has been M. The one exception was San Andreas, which jumped to AO in 2005 after the Hot Coffee mod unlocked a cut sex minigame, and went back to M once that content was removed. The only new line here is In-Game Purchases. That label didn’t exist when GTA V was first rated in 2013. The ESRB added it in 2018, and with GTA 6 Online coming, it’s no surprise to see it.
Last week a PlayStation ad in Australia showed GTA 6 with an X 18+ label, a category games can’t even get (here’s why). The ESRB rating is the first official one that comes with descriptors, and it’s as boring as I hoped. Seven more weeks, and you’ll be able to check every line of it in Vice City yourself.
