1. A different coast entirely
GTA V gave us Los Santos and Blaine County — Southern California inside the state of San Andreas. GTA VI leaves the west coast for Leonida, Rockstar’s modern Florida, with Vice City at its center and five more confirmed regions around it: the Leonida Keys, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, Grassrivers and Mount Kalaga. The headline change isn’t “bigger” — it’s neon-and-swamp instead of mountains-and-desert.
2. Two leads instead of three
GTA V’s trio ran loosely parallel lives with on-the-fly switching. GTA VI confirms two protagonists — Jason and Lucia — and the design intent is different in kind, not just number: they’re a couple with one shared story, widely compared by fans and press to a modern Bonnie and Clyde. Lucia is also the first fully-voiced, non-optional woman protagonist in a mainline GTA. An Extended Look showed how the switch works: free in the open world, fixed during some story beats, and either one can be called over to join the other.
3. Satire aimed at right now
GTA V launched in 2013 and skewered 2013. GTA VI is set in the present, and the trailers are saturated with today’s internet — influencers, phone cameras, short-form video. Same satirical instinct, new target.
4. Built for current-gen only
GTA V shipped on PS3 and Xbox 360. GTA VI launches only on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S — no last-gen versions, and no PC release dated. That’s a genuine technical break: one game was built for decade-old hardware, the other assumes SSD-based machines. The gap between the two releases — 2013 to November 19, 2026 — is the longest wait between mainline GTAs ever. Pre-orders opened June 25, 2026 at $79.99 standard and $99.99 Ultimate. The money behind the game scales the same way: Rockstar has never published a figure, and analysts put the development cost at $1–1.5 billion — a different order of spending from GTA V’s era.
5. A more alive world
What official footage confirms: denser crowds, detailed weather and water, and real wildlife — alligators in the Grassrivers, birds, swamp life. After Red Dead Redemption 2’s ecosystems, the push past GTA V’s comparatively static world is obvious on screen.
6. The map, measured honestly
Rockstar has published no map size for either game. What exists is community cartography — and it deserves better than its reputation.
Every viral “GTA 6 vs GTA 5” comparison image traces back to the mapping project on GTAForums, where fans reconstruct Leonida frame by frame from trailers and official screenshots, measuring in the native units of Rockstar’s RAGE engine. Their running total for GTA 6’s landmass: around 125 km².
Here’s where most comparisons go sideways. GTA 5’s famous “75.84 km²” figure includes almost 28 km² of ocean and lakes — the actual land is 48.15 km². Compare land to land and Leonida comes out roughly 2.6 times bigger; include or exclude the northern panhandle and different fan measurements land anywhere between ×2.4 and ×2.7. So when one headline says “twice as big” and another screams “nearly triple,” they are usually describing the same map with different rulers. For extra scale: Red Dead Redemption 2 measures about 75 km² in total — Leonida’s land alone beats it by two-thirds.
Why trust a map Rockstar never published? Because this experiment already ran once. Before GTA 5 launched, the same forum crowd assembled a speculative San Andreas from trailer frames, and the real map arrived remarkably close to their reconstruction. The honest caveat: 125 km² measures what the trailers have shown. If Leonida hides regions Rockstar hasn’t put on camera yet, the number only goes up.
Area alone never made an open world good — GTA 5’s map was a quarter mountains and desert. Two details matter more than the multiplier:
- Vice City out-cities Los Santos. Community overlays suggest Vice City’s urban core alone covers more ground than the entirety of Los Santos, with a denser, taller skyline. Miami gives Rockstar better raw material than Los Angeles did.
- The map will feel bigger than it measures. Trailer 2’s draw distance became its own meme — distant cars, road signs and lamp posts stay sharp where older games dissolved into fog. When the horizon holds detail, distance stops being an abstraction.

What Rockstar hasn’t published
- An official map size. Rockstar has never published one for GTA 6 or, for that matter, for Leonida’s regions. The ~125 km² above is community cartography with a good record of accuracy — an informed estimate, not a Rockstar number.
- “700+ enterable interiors.” Also a fan estimate.
- Ray tracing, exact resolution and frame rate. Reasonable expectations for a current-gen-only game — but unpublished.
Quick FAQ
How many protagonists does GTA 6 have?
Two — Jason and Lucia —
versus GTA V’s three.
Is GTA 6 coming to PC?
No PC version has been announced or dated;
launch is PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only.
When does GTA 6 release?
November 19, 2026.
How much bigger is the GTA 6 map than GTA 5’s?
Community measurements
put GTA 6’s landmass at ~125 km² against GTA 5’s 48 km² of land — roughly 2.6
times, ranging ×2.4–2.7 depending on methodology. Rockstar has published no
figure of its own, though Rob Nelson has said Leonida is three times the size
of the RDR2 map — which, at RDR2’s ~75 km², points higher than the
fan measurement and suggests he is counting total area rather than land.
Is the GTA 6 map bigger than RDR2’s?
Yes, and this is the one
comparison Rockstar has made itself: Rob Nelson calls Leonida three times the
size of RDR2’s map. The fan measurements are more conservative — Leonida’s
~125 km² of land alone outsizes RDR2’s ~75 km² total map by two-thirds.
Is Vice City bigger than Los Santos?
Community overlays say yes — Vice
City’s urban area alone covers more ground than all of Los Santos, with a
denser and taller skyline to match Miami’s real-world profile.
