Vice City is the heart of Grand Theft Auto VI — Rockstar’s contemporary take on Miami and the center of gravity for the entire state of Leonida. The city headlined GTA: Vice City in 2002 and returned once more in Vice City Stories in 2006; this is the first time the series has gone back since, and the reimagining is total: instead of revisiting the pastel 1986 of Tommy Vercetti, the new Vice City is a present-day metropolis filled with influencers, beach culture, cruise ships and nightlife.
The extended look was the first time the city moved under a player’s hands. Traffic is thicker and the streets narrower than anything San Andreas had, the sidewalks are crowded, and each district is dressed to its own culture down to who walks it. Interiors got the same treatment: the showcase opens inside an apartment block, elevator included, and the camera never cuts as it hands control over.
A city of contrasts
Rockstar’s official material sketches a city where every district has its own register: art-deco hotels and white sand along the beachfront, the bakeries of Little Cuba, flea-market bootlegs, a high-rise downtown, and a port ranked among the busiest cruise hubs anywhere. Where the original game satirized the cocaine-’80s, this Vice City aims at today — clout-chasing, content culture, and the gap between the city’s shine and what actually pays for it.
Districts and places — what’s actually named
Rockstar has said five of these names out loud: Ocean Beach, Little Cuba, the Tisha-Wocka flea market, VC Port and Southside. Trailer analysis adds Vice Beach, Downtown Vice City, Tequesta, Peacock Bay, the Vice City Design District and Vice Memorial Park. Which name came from where — and what the new map changed since 2002 — is broken down district by district in our Vice City districts guide. More names circulate online, and the fuller picture will come into focus closer to release.
Where it sits in Leonida
Vice City anchors the state’s south-east Atlantic side: a mainland downtown grid, a beach strip across the water, and islands and waterways threaded between them. West of the city the map opens into the Grassrivers swamps; south, causeways drop toward the Leonida Keys. Characters like Boobie Ike and the Only Raw Records scene are anchored here, and the story of Lucia and Jason clearly runs through it.
You can explore the location’s geography and surroundings on our interactive map.
