The Leonida Keys are GTA VI’s tropical archipelago — a thin chain of islands hanging off the southern tip of the state, strung together by a single highway of causeways and bridges. It’s the game’s take on the Florida Keys, and Rockstar’s framing is exact: a place where the dress code is loose, the bars are full, and the easy life sits on top of some of the most beautiful and dangerous waters in America.

It is also the prettiest place Rockstar has shown so far. The press shots above are the postcard end of GTA VI: turquoise shallows, yachts at anchor, sport boats working the reef line, and divers exploring the secrets of the underwater world. The published footage hints at a wealth of activities, and the developers put special emphasis on the sheer beauty and freedom of the water.

Key Lento: the Capital of Slow Living

The one town Rockstar has named in the Keys is Key Lento — and the name is a bilingual wink. Real-world Key Largo takes its name from the Spanish for “long”; largo also happens to be a musical tempo marking, and so is lento — “slow.” Rockstar renamed Key Largo by swapping one slow tempo for another. The town even stars in its own scroll-driven postcard video on the official GTA 6 website, which tells you how central Rockstar considers it.

Key Lento is where the story starts breathing: it is the showcase town of the region Jason calls home and the one Lucia comes to after her release. Frame-hunters also matched the buildings on the town’s western side to Islamorada, the “Village of Islands” a little further down the real Overseas Highway — so Key Lento is a blend of the upper Keys rather than a single postcode.

Geography as gameplay

One road in, one road out, open water on both sides — the Keys are built so that boats matter as much as cars. The Keys Causeway leaves southern Vice-Dale County and arcs island to island over open water, a broken bridge decaying beside it and a surveillance blimp hanging overhead — the full story of Leonida’s bridges covers all three, and the real Florida disaster behind them. Between them run mangrove channels, marinas and reef water.

That blimp says a lot: this is smuggler geography, and the game knows it. Remote coves, international waters close by, and a highway that’s also a chokepoint.

The story starts here

The Keys are the home turf of Jason Duval — the place where he landed after the Army and went to work for local drug runners. His landlord and employer Brian Heder runs a boat yard here, and Cal Hampton monitors Coast Guard radio from his couch nearby. That’s three of the eight officially revealed characters anchored in one region — the clearest signal of where GTA VI’s opening chapters live.

Smuggler Country: Brian Heder and the Golden Age

Rockstar’s official character sheet spells out what the Keys are for. Brian Heder is described as a classic drug runner from the golden age of smuggling in the Keys — still moving drugs through his boat yard, third wife Lori at his side, long past the point of doing his own dirty work. Jason lives rent-free at one of Brian’s properties, paying in favors instead, and in a GTA game those favors have a way of outgrowing the word.

Jason’s own bio closes the loop: after the Army, he landed in the Keys “doing what he knows best, working for local drug runners.” Put the pieces together and the region’s role writes itself — the Keys are GTA 6’s smuggling heartland, the place where open water, reef channels, and distance from Vice City make certain careers possible. That surveillance blimp overhead suddenly makes narrative sense too.

One bonus for series veterans: the Keys have a ghost ancestor. Back in the 3D Universe, radio chatter in Vice City and Vice City Stories mentioned the Gator Keys — an off-map stand-in for the same archipelago. Twenty years later, Rockstar finally built the islands it once only name-dropped.

Hurricane Roxy: the Scar in the Scenery

Look closely at official material and the Keys carry storm damage with a name attached: signs point to Hurricane Roxy, a storm implied to have hit the region before the game begins. It’s classic Rockstar environmental storytelling — real Keys communities measure their history in hurricanes, and Leonida’s islands apparently do too. Whether Roxy is just set dressing or a thread the story pulls on (insurance scams and disaster fraud are a proud Florida tradition) is one of the region’s better open questions. Our weather page covers Leonida’s storm seasons in general.

Frequently asked

What are the Leonida Keys based on?
The real Florida Keys, including their bridges, marinas and smuggling history.

Can you drive to the Keys?
Yes — the islands connect to the mainland by a chain of causeways and bridges.

Is this where the game starts?
Judging by Trailer 2, Jason’s official backstory begins right here.

What is Key Lento based on?
Key Largo, first and foremost — the name swaps one slow musical tempo (largo) for another (lento). Buildings on the town’s west side also borrow from Islamorada, so it’s a collage of the upper Florida Keys.

Who lives in the Leonida Keys?
Jason Duval, rent-free at one of smuggler Brian Heder’s properties — favors instead of rent. Lucia Caminos joins him there after her release, and Jason’s friend Cal Hampton monitors Coast Guard radio from his home nearby.

Are there sharks in the Leonida Keys?
Shark fins cut the water offshore in Trailer 1, and Rockstar’s own description warns the waters are as dangerous as they are beautiful. The full sea-life roster lives on our wildlife page.

What is Hurricane Roxy in GTA 6?
A storm implied to have battered the Keys before the events of the game — visible as damage in official material. Whether it stays scenery or becomes story is a question An Extended Look left open.
