First of Her KindFirst fully voiced female lead in the series

Lucia Caminos is one of the two playable protagonists of Grand Theft Auto VI, and the character Rockstar chose to open the entire game’s marketing with. When Trailer 1 dropped in December 2023, the first face on screen wasn’t a city skyline or a car chase — it was Lucia, sitting across from a prison therapist. That choice tells you a lot about where the story starts.

The first female lead — with an asterisk

You’ll often see Lucia described as “the first female protagonist in GTA history.” The accurate version is slightly different, and worth getting right. The original top-down GTA (1997) and GTA 2 let you pick from a roster that included women — but those were silent, interchangeable sprites with no story of their own. Lucia is the first fully voiced, non-optional female lead in the series: a character the story is actually built around, not a skin you can select. In the 3D and HD eras — from GTA III through GTA V — every protagonist was male.

From Liberty City to a Leonida prison cell

Lucia didn’t grow up in Vice City. Her roots are widely placed in Liberty City — the GTA universe’s take on New York — though Rockstar has never put that in writing. What the official character description does say is that her father taught her to fight “as soon as she could walk.”

That upbringing didn’t keep trouble away. Lucia ended up serving time in Leonida Penitentiary — the reason, per Rockstar, was “protecting her family,” though the specifics haven’t been revealed. The story appears to open around her release: official material describes her getting out through a stroke of luck, determined to play things smart from here on. The ankle monitor she wears is the hinge of that opening: Rockstar told the press it is central to how she and Jason are brought together in the first place. On screen it reads as parole — walking free, but one mistake away from going back. Lucia may well start the game with her movement restricted — that ankle monitor is not on screen by accident.

Her role in the story

Both trailers frame Lucia as the emotional engine of GTA VI. She’s presented as the planner of the duo — the one weighing risks, the one with the most to lose. Her partnership with Jason Duval, the game’s second protagonist, sits at the center of the narrative: Rockstar has leaned hard into the “outlaw couple” framing, with the pair pulling jobs together across Leonida.

Gameplay-wise, marketing materials point to Lucia being capable in both combat and driving — consistent with a protagonist you’ll spend roughly half the game controlling. The extended gameplay showcase settled how the game splits time between her and Jason: switching is free in the open world and locked in a handful of story beats. The closing police chase puts Lucia at the wheel while Jason fires from the back seat, and the game lets you pick which of those two seats is yours. The romance between them is optional, and playing it either way carries no bonus to her stats.
