Quick Answer: A full abduction mechanic hasn’t been shown — but everything around it has. Trailer 1 closes with Jason and Lucia robbing a store in masks, hostages under control; Red Dead Redemption 2 already gave Rockstar a complete toolkit for taking a person against their will (hogtie, carry, transport); and modders found an unfinished script buried in GTA 5’s files. Fans are betting the feature finally ships in GTA 6 — details closer to release.

How Robberies Work Now

Money is more than a score this time: at points the story simply won’t move until you’ve raised a certain sum, and An Extended Look gave a good part of its 27 minutes to how you raise it. Jobs can be run alone or as a couple, and pulling them together also grows the relationship between the two.

Every robbery is the same call — greed or speed. Blow the safe with explosives and you’re out fast, but the blast damages what was inside; search the place for the combination and the take is bigger, only the police may be standing outside by the time you walk out. Most targets have a second way out, and the back door is the classic one.

What you carry away goes to fences, RDR2-style: one buys jewellery, another buys cars. Deliver a car scratched and that fence pays less — and sometimes he pays in information instead, like the gate code to a police impound full of vehicles ready to flip. All of it feeds the Criminal Profile: the honour system of RDR2 rebuilt without a moral axis, where the world reacts to the pattern of what you do and the story can bend along with it.

What the Trailers Actually Show

The clearest signal sits in the scene that closes Trailer 1: Jason and Lucia, masked, mid-robbery, with civilians face-down under their guns. Controlling people — not just shooting past them — is visibly part of how crime works in this game. Add Rockstar’s own synopsis — a couple whose easy robbery goes wrong — and the story practically requires situations where someone ends up in the wrong car against their will. What we haven’t seen is the free-roam version: grabbing a random NPC, restraining them, and driving off. That specific verb is still off-camera.

Rockstar Already Built the Toolkit

Here’s why fans treat this as a “when,” not an “if.” Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped the entire mechanic in 2018, just wearing a cowboy hat: lasso an NPC, hogtie them, carry them on your shoulder, sling them over your horse, and take them anywhere — including places they very much didn’t want to go. Every animation, AI reaction, and physics problem involved in moving an unwilling virtual person has already been solved inside Rockstar’s engine. Porting the idea from horseback to a car trunk is an evolution, not an invention — and Reddit threads asking for exactly that pop up like clockwork.

There’s an even more direct breadcrumb. The author of GTA 5’s most popular mod on the subject states plainly that he expanded a script Rockstar itself started building and then scrapped — victims in that unfinished code could even try to bribe their way free. Rockstar wanted this mechanic a full console generation ago. The studio that cut it for time in 2013 has had thirteen years and a much bigger budget since.

Why Vice City Is the Right Stage for It

The genre context matters too. Sleeping Dogs proved back in 2012 that grabbing NPCs and stuffing them into trunks works in an open city — it’s been the reference point for this conversation ever since. And GTA 6’s own fiction leans in: an economy built on taking people fits a state of smuggling routes, gang compounds, and a couple robbing their way toward the good life. Hostages as police leverage during escapes, ransom as a sideline, targets who need to be delivered rather than eliminated — the design space is wide open, and Leonida’s geography (one road out of the Keys, swamps that swallow evidence) looks purpose-built for it.

What to Watch For

The extended showcase gave its crime minutes to robberies, fences and the escape, and no restrained NPC crossed the frame. The tell will be small: one shot of a tied-up NPC being moved, one mission description with the word “deliver” where “kill” would usually sit. Where things stand: robbery with hostages is on screen, the free-roam version is the community’s favorite educated guess. How hard the escape gets afterwards is a separate system — see our police and wanted level page.

FAQ

Can you take hostages in GTA 6?
Trailer 1 shows Jason and Lucia controlling hostages during a store robbery — hostage situations are clearly part of the crime gameplay. How much control the player gets is the open question.

Will GTA 6 have a hogtie mechanic like RDR2?
Rockstar shipped the full hogtie-and-carry system in RDR2, so the technology exists in-house. Fans widely expect a modern version in GTA 6 — details closer to release.

Was that mechanic in GTA 5?
Not as a finished feature — but modders found an unfinished script in the game’s files, which Rockstar started and scrapped. Popular mods later built the mechanic on top of that unfinished code.

Can you put people in the trunk in GTA 6?
Nothing official shows it yet. It’s the single most requested version of the mechanic — Sleeping Dogs did it in 2012, and fan threads asking Rockstar to match it resurface constantly.

Will it be part of GTA 6’s story?
The synopsis — a criminal couple whose easy robbery goes wrong inside a statewide conspiracy — makes such scenarios feel almost inevitable in missions, whatever happens in free roam.

When will we know for sure?
The 27-minute showcase went deep on robberies, fences and escapes without showing it. Mechanics like this tend to surface in mission footage rather than announcements, so the remaining windows are the pre-launch cuts and the game itself.
