The trailer that started it all. Rockstar dropped it without warning on December 5, 2023, and it became the most-watched game trailer in history within a day — a record that stood until Trailer 2 beat it.
What it showed
- Lucia Caminos opens the trailer in a prison therapy session, then walks free from Leonida Penitentiary — the series’ first fully voiced, non-optional female protagonist.
- Jason Duval, introduced in the Leonida Keys, working for local drug runners.
- The first look at Vice City and the wider state of Leonida, including Grassrivers and its wildlife.
- The two protagonists shown operating together for the first time, setting up the dual-protagonist structure the whole game is built around.
- Present-day setting details: social feeds and stream culture are treated as part of the world itself, not just marketing dressing.
Locations confirmed
- The Ocean Drive beachfront strip — neon hotels and muscle beach, the series’ most recognizable postcard, rebuilt for the modern era.
- Venetian Islands — the residential island chain in the bay. Later reconfirmed in Trailer 2.
- The Vice City Sign — a Hollywood-style welcome sign announcing the city.
- VC Port — container cranes and shipping infrastructure, the working waterfront.
- Tequesta Condos — residential towers, identified by name in frame analysis.
- Nine1Nine nightclub — the first glimpse of Vice City’s nightlife economy.
- Interstate 97 — the main coastal artery. Trailer 2 later staged a highway set piece here.
- Street takeover / car-meet culture — confirmed as a world activity, though the exact district hasn’t been pinned down yet.
- Grassrivers — an Everglades-style wetland, shown with airboats and alligators.
- Waning Sands — sandy backcountry where Jason is shown, proof the map reaches well past the city.
What held up — and what changed
Nothing from this trailer’s content has been contradicted since. Several locations — Venetian Islands and Interstate 97 among them — were directly reconfirmed in Trailer 2. The one thing that didn’t survive is the release date: the original 2025 window slipped twice before landing on the confirmed November 19, 2026 launch.
Why it mattered
Before this trailer, GTA VI had been rumored for years with zero official confirmation. Rockstar’s own choice of opening shot — Lucia, not a skyline or a car chase — signaled early that this game’s marketing, and likely its story, would be led by strong, charismatic characters.
Everything here comes from official Rockstar materials. Analysis is labeled. We don’t publish leaks.
