🐊A Series FirstVice City's home state finally gets its own name

Leonida is the fictional U.S. state that all of Grand Theft Auto VI takes place in — Rockstar’s answer to Florida, and the state Vice City calls home. It isn’t just another location name on the list: it’s the container for all six confirmed regions, from the neon coast of Vice City to the backwoods of Mount Kalaga. Ask “what is Leonida” and the short answer is the whole map.

Rockstar’s own description of its size, from animation director Rob Nelson at the extended look, runs to two words: “very big.” Each district is dressed to its own culture, down to who walks its streets, and the pause map is now built on satellite imagery rather than the flat block diagram of past games. The numbers behind the size are on the map page.

What Rockstar actually says

Rockstar’s own synopsis puts it plainly: “Grand Theft Auto VI heads to the state of Leonida, home to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond in the biggest, most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet.” The story synopsis goes further, setting events “on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida.”

Rockstar even gave the state its own promo page, rockstargames.com/VI/only-in-leonida, headlined “Only in Leonida” — “Home to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond” — which tours “a few of the must-see destinations across the sunshine state.”

The Florida Rockstar won’t type

Here’s the detail worth noticing: nowhere in that synopsis or that promo page does Rockstar write the word “Florida.” It’s “the sunshine state,” it’s “the sunniest place in America” — real Florida, described everywhere except by name. For a marketing campaign that otherwise leans hard on unmistakably Floridian iconography (alligators, sugar mills, surveillance blimps, a Miami skyline), the omission looks less like an accident than a wink: everybody knows exactly what state this is, so the official copy just never has to say it.

A state with its own name, finally

There’s a bigger continuity point buried in that choice. In 2002’s GTA: Vice City, the city itself was fictional, but the state it sat in was not — the series placed Vice City in Florida outright. GTA VI is the first time the series has given Vice City’s home state a fictional name of its own, putting it on the same footing as San Andreas, the invented California that’s anchored the West Coast games since 2004’s GTA: San Andreas. Leonida is Vice City’s state finally leveling up to match its city — down to its own flag.

Six regions, one Leonida

Rockstar’s own “Only in Leonida” tour names exactly six regions, in this order: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga. No seventh region has been named. For the full tour of each — districts, characters, confirmed details — see our regions overview and the map size and real-Florida basis.

Counties: one named, more implied

Leonida is also divided into counties, and Rockstar has confirmed exactly one by name: Vice-Dale County, home to Vice City, drawn from the synopsis line about “several counties in the State of Leonida, including Vice-Dale County.” That word “several” is Rockstar’s own confirmation that more counties exist — it just hasn’t named them. Everything else drawn on fan county maps is unofficial.

Where the name might come from

Rockstar has never explained where “Leonida” comes from. The dominant theory in the press ties it to Juan Ponce de León, the Spanish explorer who named the real Florida peninsula “La Florida” in 1513 — the echo of “León” in “Leonida” is the connection commentators draw.

Not Florida, point for point

Leonida borrows from real Florida at a few different levels of certainty, and they shouldn’t be flattened into one:

Beyond argument, though Rockstar never types the real names: Vice City is built as Miami, Grassrivers as the Everglades — the region Rockstar’s own copy crowns “the untameable jewel of Leonida’s crown” — and the Leonida Keys as the Florida Keys. The imagery leaves no room for doubt; the real-world names are still the community’s words, not the studio’s.

Spotted by the press: Port Gellhorn is widely identified as Panama City and Bay County; Ambrosia echoes Clewiston, Florida, real home of a sugar mill and the nickname “America’s Sweetest Town.” Recognizable Miami landmarks turn up too — buildings matched to the Versace Mansion, the Freedom Tower, the Fontainebleau, and Wynwood’s murals — alongside a stretch of causeway in the Keys that recalls the old, abandoned Seven Mile Bridge.

Community guesses, the shakiest tier: some fans read Mount Kalaga’s canyon terrain against Georgia’s Providence Canyon and the Suwannee River — technically outside Florida altogether — and match the Keys’ surveillance blimp to the real “Fat Albert” radar aerostat that flies near Cudjoe Key.

Rockstar’s own satire layer confirms the state knows exactly what it’s parodying: the Weazel News ticker runs a “Leonida Man” gag, its riff on the real “Florida Man” meme, and Little Cuba is an officially confirmed Vice City district reflecting Miami’s Cuban-American community.

Institutions and flavor

Leonida Penitentiary is the state’s only officially named prison — it’s where Lucia Caminos is serving time as the story opens. And Brian Heder gets the best in-character line about the place’s scale, boasting: “I hauled so much grass in that plane, I could make the state of Leonida levitate.” It’s a smuggler’s joke, and it’s a good reminder that Leonida is written as a place people brag about.

FAQ

What is Leonida in GTA 6?
The fictional U.S. state the entire game is set in — Rockstar’s version of Florida, and home to Vice City and five other confirmed regions.

Is Leonida based on Florida?
Yes. Rockstar’s own synopsis calls it “the sunniest place in America” and “the sunshine state” without ever writing “Florida” directly, but every regional inspiration Rockstar has confirmed points to the real state.

How many regions are in Leonida?
Six, officially named by Rockstar: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga.

What does “Leonida” mean?
Rockstar hasn’t said. The leading press theory links it to Juan Ponce de León, who named the real Florida peninsula “La Florida” in 1513.

Is Vice-Dale the only county in Leonida?
It’s the only one Rockstar has named. The synopsis mentions “several counties,” so more exist — they just haven’t been revealed.
