The extended look settled how you interact with all of it: every new species you spot — at the zoo or in the wild — is logged in a compendium straight out of RDR2, the zoo is a place you walk through and study the animals in, and dogs can be petted or told off.

Animals are sorted into Rare, Discoverable and Legendary, and the rare ones are being kept secret. Game Informer also lists what the shaders do: iridescence, bioluminescence, translucency, several feather types and a fur system where a coat gets wet, dirty and matted.

Swamps & Wetlands — the Dangerous Half

Grassrivers and the backwaters are Leonida’s Everglades, and that’s where the wildlife gets teeth:

• American Alligator — the undisputed mascot. It walks into a convenience store in Trailer 1, dominates official screenshots, and even got its own merch nod (“Macca the Gator”) in the Ultimate Edition. When Rockstar pushes one animal this hard, expect gators to be a gameplay system, not scenery.
• Florida Panther — spotted prowling the wilderness boundary in screenshots (official Ultimate Edition art also tags this animal as “puma” — same species, real Florida panthers are a puma subspecies). The real one is endangered with fewer than 250 left.
• Green Iguana — ambles toward Jason’s house in Trailer 2, exactly like the invasive porch pests of real Florida.
• Snakes — fans have spotted a python terrarium in shots of Jason and Lucia’s home; wild Burmese pythons are Florida’s most infamous invaders, so expect them in the swamps too.
• Wild Boar — bolts through the frame in Trailer 2 during the Buzzard chase sequence. Feral hogs are one of Florida’s biggest invasive headaches, so seeing one flushed out by a helicopter is almost documentary.
• Beavers — a pair spotted in a Grassrivers screenshot. An odd pick for the subtropics until you remember beavers really do live in the Florida panhandle.
• Also confirmed on land: white-tailed deer, black bear, bobcat, fox, squirrel (mix of screenshots and community frame analysis of trailer footage; bears are confirmed for Mount Kalaga and its surroundings). One Grassrivers screenshot deserves a second look: hunters posing next to a bagged bobcat. It’s easy to read this as a piece of a future hunting system — no menus, no mechanics, just a scene that wouldn’t exist in a world without hunting.

Urban Vice City

The city has its own ecosystem, living off what people throw away:

• Raccoon — caught mid-heist in a trash can in Trailer 2. Fitting.
• Bodega cat — sits on an ATM cleaning itself, a perfect piece of Miami texture.
• Dogs — multiple breeds confirmed across footage: German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Doberman, Chihuahua. One more for the list: a miniature pinscher trotting along the beach beside two NPCs, a cameo that flashes through the frame for a split second.
• Iguana in a T-shirt — an iguana wearing a shirt hangs around outside Jason’s place and shows up again in a later screenshot. A dressed-up reptile that keeps reappearing looks more like a pet than a random spawn — put it next to the python terrarium, and Jason and Lucia’s place starts looking like a small exotic zoo.

The Sky

The bird count in official material is a quiet flex — ambient birds are expensive to simulate well:

• Flamingos — a flock in the swamp shallows (Trailer 2), instantly iconic
• Pelicans — coasting over the shoreline in both trailers
• Seagulls — from the very first shots of Trailer 1
• Herons and egrets — wading the wetlands in screenshots

Ocean & Coast

Official material shows a genuinely living ocean:

• Sharks — fins offshore in Trailer 1; community analysis reads a great white silhouette, though bull and blacktip sharks are the realistic Florida picks
• Sea turtles — swimming the shallows in screenshots
• Eels and reef fish — in underwater footage

Species ID: How Deep the Detail Goes

Community trackers on GTAForums didn’t stop at “bird” and “shark” — they pinned footage down to species level, and the picks are almost aggressively Floridian:

• The pelicans are brown pelicans and the flamingos are American flamingos — exactly what a real Gulf Coast shoreline gives you. The gulls were logged as European herring gulls, a species that doesn’t actually live on that coast, so the more likely candidates are the laughing and ring-billed gulls of the Florida shore.
• The “pink heron” wading the shallows is a roseate spoonbill, and the ducks match Florida’s native mottled duck.
• The sea turtle gliding through the Keys shallows is a loggerhead — Florida hosts the largest loggerhead nesting population in the world.
• The deer in the Leonida Keys look like Key deer, a dwarf subspecies that exists nowhere on Earth outside the real Florida Keys. If that ID holds, regional wildlife varies island by island — RDR2-grade ecosystem design.
• The shark is where sources diverge: some read the offshore silhouette as a great white, the GTAForums breakdown says tiger shark. Either way, you probably don’t want to test it.
• And the strangest catch: fans spotted a bat crossing a night sky over Vice City. If ambient wildlife runs on a day/night cycle, nights in Leonida could become an experience of their own — with fauna you’ll only ever meet after dark.

Sea life used to be the quiet dispute: some trackers logged a West Indian manatee in Trailer 1, others filed it under “expected.” Game Informer settled it. Manatees are confirmed by name, along with sharks, whales, rays, turtles and jellyfish, and Florida’s unofficial second mascot is in.

The takeaway from all of this: Rockstar isn’t dressing the world with generic “animal” assets. It’s casting the actual fauna of the region, species by species — the same approach that made RDR2’s world feel biologically real.

The Open Questions

Based on chatter online, more animals can be expected: cows, frogs, pigeons, possums, rats, skunks, crayfish. Florida ecology and the RDR2 precedent also make otters and coyotes plausible.

Two questions come up constantly. Crocodiles: real Florida is the only place on earth where alligators and crocodiles share a habitat, but every reptile Rockstar has shown so far is an alligator — no crocodile has appeared in official footage. Aquariums: the zoo is in — you walk through it and everything you see goes in the compendium — but no aquarium or marine park has surfaced in any official material.

The open question is no longer the roster, since Rockstar has put a number on it. It’s the systems: hunting, animal attacks, pets you can actually keep. Fishing is settled, it appears in An Extended Look. The Rare, Discoverable and Legendary tiers point at something like a hunt for rare animals, and a Game Informer screenshot shows a man with a scoped rifle watching two deer at a creek.
