GTA 6 hasn’t shipped, so there is no official species list — this page tracks every animal Rockstar itself has shown across trailers and official press screenshots, organized by habitat. The density of animals in official footage rivals what RDR2 showed before launch, which says a lot about the ambient simulation underneath.

The extended look settled how you interact with all of it: every new species you spot — at the zoo or in the wild — is logged in a compendium straight out of RDR2, the zoo is a place you walk through and study the animals in, and dogs can be petted or told off.

Swamps & Wetlands — the Dangerous Half

Grassrivers and the backwaters are Leonida’s Everglades, and that’s where the wildlife gets teeth:

Urban Vice City

The city has its own ecosystem, living off what people throw away:

The Sky

The bird count in official material is a quiet flex — ambient birds are expensive to simulate well:

Ocean & Coast

Official material shows a genuinely living ocean:

Species ID: How Deep the Detail Goes

Community trackers on GTAForums didn’t stop at “bird” and “shark” — they pinned footage down to species level, and the picks are almost aggressively Floridian:

Sea life is the other quiet dispute. Some trackers logged a West Indian manatee in Trailer 1; others still file manatees under “expected.” Given that manatees are Florida’s unofficial second mascot, the question isn’t really if — it’s whether we see one before launch.

The takeaway from all of this: Rockstar isn’t dressing the world with generic “animal” assets. It’s casting the actual fauna of the region, species by species — the same approach that made RDR2’s world feel biologically real.

The Open Questions

Based on chatter online, more animals can be expected: cows, frogs, pigeons, possums, rats, skunks, whales, crayfish. Florida ecology and the RDR2 precedent also make manatees, otters, and coyotes plausible.

Two questions come up constantly. Crocodiles: real Florida is the only place on earth where alligators and crocodiles share a habitat, but every reptile Rockstar has shown so far is an alligator — no crocodile has appeared in official footage. Aquariums: the zoo is in — you walk through it and everything you see goes in the compendium — but no aquarium or marine park has surfaced in any official material.

The open question isn’t the roster — it’s the systems: hunting, animal attacks, pets you can actually keep. Fishing is settled, it appears in An Extended Look; the rest Rockstar has not detailed. Given that Leonida’s deadliest resident already walked into a store on camera, we suspect the answer is going to be fun.

FAQ

How many animals are confirmed in GTA 6?
Over 25 species have been identified across official trailers and press screenshots — from alligators and Florida panthers on land to loggerhead turtles and dolphins offshore, plus a dozen bird species. The count keeps growing with every official drop.

Will GTA 6 have hunting and fishing?
Fishing is in — it appears in An Extended Look, and Rockstar’s own Mount Kalaga copy names it too. Hunting is named in that same copy, and a Grassrivers screenshot shows hunters posing next to a bagged bobcat; how a hunt plays is still unshown.

Can you have pets in GTA 6?
Official material keeps nudging in that direction: a python terrarium inside Jason and Lucia’s home, an iguana in a T-shirt loitering outside Jason’s place across multiple shots, and plenty of dogs at NPCs’ sides. Whether the player can own and interact with pets is still an open question.

Are there sharks in GTA 6?
Yes — shark fins cut through the water offshore in Trailer 1. Community analysis splits on the species: some read a great white, the detailed GTAForums breakdown says tiger shark. Both are real Florida residents.

Do alligators attack you in GTA 6?
Most likely, yes — Rockstar has pushed the alligator harder than any other animal: it walks into a store in Trailer 1, headlines press screenshots, and got its own Ultimate Edition merch nod. That level of spotlight usually means a gameplay system, not set dressing.

Are there horses in GTA 6?
No horse has appeared in any trailer or screenshot. Real Florida has a serious horse-country scene around Ocala, so ambient ranches wouldn’t be a shock — but as of now, nothing points to rideable animals.

Everything here comes from official Rockstar materials. Analysis is labeled. We don’t publish leaks.
