Swamps & Wetlands — the Dangerous Half

Grassrivers and the backwaters are Leonida’s Everglades, and that’s where the wildlife gets teeth:

• American Alligator — the undisputed mascot. It walks into a convenience store in Trailer 1, dominates official screenshots, and even got its own merch nod (“Macca the Alligator”) in the Ultimate Edition. When Rockstar pushes one animal this hard, expect gators to be a gameplay system, not scenery.
• Florida Panther — spotted prowling the wilderness boundary in screenshots (official Ultimate Edition art also tags this animal as “puma” — same species, real Florida panthers are a puma subspecies). The real one is endangered with fewer than 250 left.
• Green Iguana — ambles toward Jason’s house in Trailer 2, exactly like the invasive porch pests of real Florida.
• Snakes — fans have spotted a python terrarium in shots of Jason and Lucia’s home; wild Burmese pythons are Florida’s most infamous invaders, so expect them in the swamps too.
• Wild Boar — bolts through the frame in Trailer 2 during the Buzzard chase sequence. Feral hogs are one of Florida’s biggest invasive headaches, so seeing one flushed out by a helicopter is almost documentary.
• Beavers — a pair spotted in a Grassrivers screenshot. An odd pick for the subtropics until you remember beavers really do live in the Florida panhandle.

The bird count in official material is a quiet flex — ambient birds are expensive to simulate well:

Species ID: How Deep the Detail Goes

Community trackers on GTAForums didn’t stop at “bird” and “shark” — they pinned footage down to species level, and the picks are almost aggressively Floridian:

• The pelicans are brown pelicans and the flamingos are American flamingos — exactly what a real Gulf Coast shoreline gives you. The gulls were logged as European herring gulls, a species that doesn’t actually live on that coast, so the more likely candidates are the laughing and ring-billed gulls of the Florida shore.
• The “pink heron” wading the shallows is a roseate spoonbill, and the ducks match Florida’s native mottled duck.
• The sea turtle gliding through the Keys shallows is a loggerhead — Florida hosts the largest loggerhead nesting population in the world.
• The deer in the Leonida Keys look like Key deer, a dwarf subspecies that exists nowhere on Earth outside the real Florida Keys. If that ID holds, regional wildlife varies island by island — RDR2-grade ecosystem design.
• The shark is where sources diverge: some read the offshore silhouette as a great white, the GTAForums breakdown says tiger shark. Either way, you probably don’t want to test it.
• And the strangest catch: fans spotted a bat crossing a night sky over Vice City. If ambient wildlife runs on a day/night cycle, nights in Leonida could become an experience of their own — with fauna you’ll only ever meet after dark.

Sea life is the other quiet dispute. Some trackers logged a West Indian manatee in Trailer 1; others still file manatees under “expected.” Given that manatees are Florida’s unofficial second mascot, the question isn’t really if — it’s whether we see one before launch.

The Open Questions
