Quick Answer. On August 26, 2026 — one day before the Trailer 3 premiere — Dazed published a cover story on GTA 6 with six Rockstar developers on record. Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos are on the cover of The Autumn 2026 Issue, the first time the pair has fronted a print magazine. The feature brings seven new character portraits and the most detailed official description yet of how the two protagonists share a playthrough, how their bodies change with what you do, and how Rockstar built Vice City out of a decade of trips to Miami.
The cover and the photos
Dazed calls the issue “New Idols”, and the choice of idols is a video game couple. Lucia and Jason share the cover; inside, the magazine runs a fashion-editorial-style gallery of seven portraits: the pair together, Lucia alone in an archive dress, Jason in a jacket and custom jewellery, Boobie Ike, Raul Bautista, and both halves of Real Dimez — Bae-Luxe and Roxy — each with a proper credits line.
Those credits are the fun part. Every outfit is attributed to an in-game label as if it were a real brand: Stock 305, Nola, Ferruccio Tucci, Caliber, This/That, Blagueurs. It reads like a page from any fashion magazine, and that is the point — Rockstar is presenting Leonida’s clothing brands the way Dazed presents its Paris runway coverage.

Who spoke
This is the widest set of Rockstar names to go on record about the game in one place. The feature quotes:
| Name | Role |
|---|---|
| Rob Nelson | Head of development and co-studio head, Rockstar North |
| Rupert Humphries | Senior vice president of narrative |
| Michael Wiafe | Game writer |
| Jamie-Lee Lloyd | Senior art director for characters |
| Stu Petri | Vice president of 2D/UI design |
| Jillian Carr | Miami-based stylist, working with Rockstar since 2023 |
Nelson frames the whole project around pressure: thirteen years since GTA 5, roughly the same amount of time in development, and an expectation he says no outside voice could match the team’s own. His summary of the design philosophy is a critical look back at the previous games — what the studio didn’t do as well as it wanted, for lack of time, technology or simply attention — and an iterative process where much is tuned by feel.
What the interview reveals
A couple you can split up
The clearest gameplay detail in the piece is how the two leads share a session. You can play Jason and Lucia as a duo or send them off to cause trouble on their own. Dazed’s example is a drive to a job: cruise the highway as Jason, or swap to Lucia in the passenger seat and scroll through the in-game phone — social media feeds are in, and they work. When the job turns into a chase, the switch lets you hold the wheel one moment and lean out of the passenger window to shoot the next. Afterwards, a jet ski across the Leonida seascape with your arms around your partner’s waist and dolphins jumping alongside.
Humphries describes the structure as a Bonnie-and-Clyde story, and the magazine notes that the trailers already spend unusual attention on how the two bodies look and move together — a hand on a ribcage, hips on a crowded dance floor. Choices inside the relationship are meant to carry consequences that cut deeper than anything in previous Rockstar games. More on the dynamic in Lucia and Jason’s relationship and dual protagonists.
Your habits show up on your body
The Red Dead Redemption 2 systems are back and expanded. Food affects Jason and Lucia’s weight. Exercise visibly builds and tones their muscles. Stay away from your bed too long — on the run from police, or on a multi-day bender — and their faces pay for it. Dazed compares it to The Picture of Dorian Gray, except the painting in the attic is the character standing in front of you. Between that feedback, the relationship mechanics and a world that reacts more sharply, the magazine expects players to think twice before the old-school arcade rampage.
A city that answers back
Nelson’s line about characters — “these characters aren’t empty avatars that you can do whatever you want with” — sits next to the feature’s description of the world itself: more grounded and more reactive than before, where walking down the street with a rifle gets a response from the city. NPCs behave less like NPCs. Dazed openly names the fear some fans have, that immersion will cost the series its anarchy, and puts Rockstar’s answer next to it: the goal is a world that reacts to whatever you choose to make of it. The ground rules for that behaviour are in NPC AI and the police and wanted system.
Lucia, the first of her kind
The magazine puts Lucia’s place in series history plainly: the first fully fleshed-out female lead in a mainline GTA, with a nod to the 1997 original and its selectable characters. It also names what previous games were criticised for — misogynistic themes, underwritten women — and says the series hopes to bring more female players into a historically male audience. Nelson’s take is that Lucia and Jason come with rich identities of their own, with enough room left for the player to make them their own; the studio wants as much self-expression as possible without losing who the characters are.
A decade in Miami
Vice City is Miami, and Dazed spells out what that took. Groups of Rockstar staff have been visiting Miami and the surrounding area for over ten years, and there is a dedicated research team based in the city. Humphries lists who they meet: ex-criminals, law enforcement, club promoters, gun dealers, anyone notorious or influential who returns the call. They hang out, listen to the stories, cross-reference with books and journalism, and pull characters out of that. Wiafe adds the guardrail — it is easy to go in cynically and put every weird thing in the game, but the team wanted to bring discovery to players rather than repeat existing clichés. Florida Man, the alligator-wrangling meme archetype, is in, but as one facet of a much larger population.
Nelson’s reason for returning to Leonida at all: Florida and Miami have one of the most diverse and interesting populations in the world. That diversity is the whole design brief.
The cast, the music, the money
Dazed sketches the supporting cast in one sweep — Brian Heder, the old-school drug runner, his conspiracy-minded associate Cal Hampton, the smooth bank robber Raul Bautista, Vice City legend Boobie Ike with his Jack of Hearts strip club and a music studio run by the young Dre’Quan Priest. Humphries explains the music angle: Rockstar loves Miami bass through to current Miami artists, and wanted characters who could walk the player from house parties in Overtown to riverside clubs to South Beach tables where bottles cost thousands. Real Dimez represent the shift toward female artists since GTA 5, and their rise can be followed through viral in-game social media posts.
Brands as a real culture
Stu Petri’s team built the in-game products, shops and campaigns, and his rule is that every brand — a fashion label, a car company — has to feel like it exists and serves a purpose in Leonida rather than being a one-off joke. The brands reflect the aspirations and lifestyles of the people in each space, and once you are dressed as Jason or Lucia, they reflect yours too: each haircut and outfit choice means something.
Jillian Carr, the Miami stylist on the project since 2023, built what she calls a fashion ecosystem meant to capture taste, lifestyle, affluence and individuality across the city and the country. Her read on the setting is the sharpest line in the piece: Vice City is built around vanity — social media, celebrity culture and a constant stream of tourists mean appearances carry weight and trends turn over fast. That feeds straight back into the crowds: young and old, tattooed, pierced or surgically modified, in Hawaiian shirts, sharp suits, luxury labels or muddy combat gear, dressed for where they live, from Little Cuba to the wilds of Mount Kalaga. Lloyd says new tools and pipelines went into building the most detailed and varied population Rockstar has ever made, and that authenticity comes from how a character looks, moves and expresses themselves together.
The size of the thing
A few numbers for scale. The team has more than doubled since Red Dead Redemption 2. One office in Los Angeles works almost entirely on pedestrians. More than fifty real street artists painted murals for places like the Stockyard, Vice City’s take on Wynwood. The vehicle-handling team is made up of actual race-car drivers. Dazed also repeats the online rumour that the game cost more than the Burj Khalifa — rumour is the word the magazine uses, and it fits.
Why the timing matters
Dazed went live on August 26 at 16:00 UTC; Trailer 3 — Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look — premieres on August 27. Read together, the interview is the text and the trailer is the picture: the switching, the body changes and the reactive city described here are exactly the systems the extended look is expected to show. The print issue on September 10 then lands seventy days before launch on November 19.
