Quick answer. The most cited estimate puts GTA 6 development at $1–1.5 billion, with the total rising to around $2 billion once marketing and the next GTA Online’s infrastructure are counted. Those are analyst numbers. The only people who know the real figure work at Take-Two, and CEO Strauss Zelnick has said exactly one thing about it: the game is “very expensive”. What the company’s own filings do show is the scale of the bet — bookings guidance for the fiscal year of launch jumps by more than $1.3 billion, and that increase is almost entirely GTA 6.

What has actually been said
Strip away the estimates and the confirmed record is short. Take-Two’s filings say development on GTA 6 began in earnest in 2020, which puts the active build at six years by launch — the longest in the series. Zelnick, asked directly by Business Insider in May 2026, called the project very expensive and left it there. Rockstar North’s British accounts, filed publicly every year, show the studio has spent more than $2.1 billion on staff since 2019, but that payroll covers everything the studio has worked on, RDR2 support and GTA Online included, so it is a ceiling on the salary side rather than a GTA 6 budget.
The one number Take-Two has committed to is a forecast. Guidance for the fiscal year of launch — April 2026 to March 2027 — is $8 to $8.2 billion in net bookings, against $6.72 billion the year before. The difference, $1.3–1.5 billion, is what the company expects GTA 6 to bring in over just four and a half months, from November 19 to March 31. That is the floor Take-Two is willing to put in writing, and it says more about the budget than any interview: nobody guides that hard on a game that cost $300 million.
What analysts have estimated
The $1–1.5 billion development figure comes from analysts speaking anonymously to Business Insider in May 2026, and it became the standard number after IGN and PC Gamer picked it up. A community model built from Take-Two’s public reports lands in the same zone at roughly $1.4 billion. Add marketing — a campaign that includes a Trailer 3 premiere on Netflix — plus the servers and tooling for the next GTA Online, and analysts arrive at the round $2 billion that fills headlines.
That $2 billion has a longer history than the analysis behind it. The figure first circulated online in 2022 and stuck because it sounded right; the analyst work of 2026 caught up with it rather than producing it. At the far end, Spieltimes extrapolated Rockstar North’s salary filings across the whole company and reached $3 billion — a method that double-counts every other project, which is why the number sits at the edge of the rumours rather than the middle.
Where the money goes
A billion-dollar budget breaks down into the same categories as a $100 million one, just multiplied.
- People. Rockstar employs several thousand developers across its studios, and GTA 6 has occupied most of them for six-plus years. Payroll is the largest line by far.
- Performance capture and cast. Every character in the trailers is an actor in a mocap suit, and the sheer density of animated crowds in Vice City means thousands of hours of captured movement. Rockstar gave the New York Times the one number that puts a size on this line: well over 600,000 NPC animations, against 55,000 in GTA 5 and 300,000 in RDR2.
- Engine work. The RAGE upgrade behind the animation systems — real-time retargeting, the motion patents, the rendering pipeline for the PS5 Pro version — is the cost that never shows up on a screenshot but underpins every one.
- Final QA. Rockstar was still hiring testers in April 2026, including a wave of positions in Bangalore, which is what a launch year looks like from the inside.
- Marketing. Trailers, the Netflix premiere, the merchandise and the store presence, plus everything still to come in November.
- Online. The next GTA Online is built alongside the story, and its infrastructure is part of the same bill.
How many copies it needs to sell
Take-Two keeps roughly 70% of each digital sale after platform fees, less for physical. Working from that, Driffle calculated a break-even between 30 and 62 million copies depending on which budget you believe — the low end for a $1 billion game, the high end for $2 billion at a blended price. For perspective, GTA V sold over a billion dollars’ worth of copies in three days back in 2013, and Konvoy expects GTA 6 to double that: $2 billion in the first 24 hours and $7.6 billion within 60 days. If those forecasts hold, the game pays for itself before Christmas.
How GTA 6 compares
| Project | Estimated cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| GTA V (2013) | ~$265 million | Development + marketing |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018) | ~$370–540 million | Range of analyst estimates |
| Cyberpunk 2077 (2020) | ~$441 million | Including marketing |
| Most expensive films | ~$400–460 million | Single production |
| Star Citizen | Higher, via crowdfunding | Still in development |
| GTA 6 | $1–2 billion | Analyst estimates |
By these numbers GTA 6 is the most expensive game ever made and the most expensive piece of entertainment ever produced in one go, with Star Citizen as the only project to have raised more — over a decade of crowdfunding, with no release. The full story of how six years of development stretched out is in GTA 6 delay history, and the codename era is covered in Project Rome.
Why the game costs $80, not $100
For a while the internet assumed a $2 billion budget meant a $100 game. Zelnick shut that down at the iicon conference in April 2026, saying the price would stay in the standard AAA range, and the editions page confirmed it: $79.99 for Standard, $99.99 for Ultimate. The math explains why. At 30–60 million copies, an extra $20 on the sticker matters less than an extra 10 million buyers, and GTA V showed where the real money is: a decade of GTA Online spending on top of the box price. The budget is recouped on volume and on the years after launch, not on the launch-day price tag.
FAQ
How much did GTA 6 cost to make? Analysts estimate $1–1.5 billion for development and around $2 billion including marketing and online infrastructure. Take-Two has published no figure; CEO Strauss Zelnick calls the game “very expensive”.
Is GTA 6 the most expensive game ever made? By analyst estimates, yes — the previous record holders, RDR2 and Cyberpunk 2077, sit around $400–540 million. Only Star Citizen has raised more, through years of crowdfunding.
How many copies does GTA 6 need to sell to break even? Driffle puts it at 30–62 million copies depending on the budget estimate. Konvoy expects $2 billion in the first 24 hours and $7.6 billion within 60 days, which would clear the budget in weeks.
Why does GTA 6 cost $79.99 if the budget is $2 billion? Zelnick said in April 2026 that the price would stay in the normal AAA range. At tens of millions of copies, volume and years of GTA Online spending recoup the budget far better than a higher sticker price would.
How long was GTA 6 in development? Development began in earnest in 2020, per Take-Two filings, giving a six-year active build by the November 2026 release — the longest in the series.
Did Take-Two confirm the GTA 6 budget? No number has been published. What Take-Two has confirmed is its forecast: $8–8.2 billion in bookings for the launch fiscal year, $1.3–1.5 billion above the year before.
