The Goodyear blimp has been repainted for GTA 6. Wingfoot Three, registration N3A, came out of its hangar this week in a black livery with Vice City written down the side in the game’s pink script, palm trees in the background and the VI logo on the nose and the underside. On October 12 it set off south, and it is heading for Florida.
Where the blimp is going
The first photos came from Goodyear’s base at Wingfoot Lake in Ohio, the big hangar where the company keeps its airships. From there the route is public, because blimps show up on flight trackers like any other aircraft.
| Stop | What we know |
|---|---|
| Wingfoot Lake, Ohio | Departure from Goodyear’s hangar, first photos of the livery |
| Winston-Salem, North Carolina | First stop, about five and a half hours in the air |
| Pompano Beach, Florida | Final destination: Goodyear’s only permanent airship base in Florida |
Pompano Beach is about forty minutes up the coast from Miami, and it is where the blimp usually spends the winter. Rockstar has said nothing about the flights. The blimp does the talking: once it lands, it should spend the run-up to the November 19 release over South Florida beaches.
Why a blimp works
Every other piece of this campaign has been fixed to a place. The sign on the Kaseya Center roof only works from a plane, the billboards only work from the street. A blimp is the opposite: it goes to the crowd. Goodyear flies these ships over football games and races, the TV cameras film them from the stands, and suddenly the Vice City logo is in the broadcast without anyone buying a TV spot.
What gets me is how well the livery reads from below. I spend my working days making things look right at the angle the player actually sees them, and here someone clearly thought about the angle from a beach towel: the biggest logo is on the belly, exactly where you look when something huge drifts over your head.
And a trailer outside the arena
The blimp is not alone. Outside the Kaseya Center, the Miami Heat’s arena, there is now a cargo trailer in the same black and pink, with Vice City along the side and the VI and Heat logos on the door. According to fans who photographed it, it works as a pop-up shop for the Vice City merch, which makes the trailer itself a piece of merch you can walk into. It fits the Heat’s Night in Vice City on November 18, the evening before the game comes out.
The rest of the real-world campaign, from the Miami rooftop to the Paris billboards, is collected on our GTA 6 marketing campaign page. If you are on a beach near Fort Lauderdale this winter, look up.
