GTA 6 is rated PEGI 18, the top age rating in most of Europe. The card in PEGI’s database names Take2 Interactive Software Europe Ltd as the publisher and shows four icons: Violence, Sex, Drugs and In-Game Purchases. That part is exactly what everyone expected. What nobody expected was the paragraph of text that appeared on PEGI’s website next to it and then disappeared from the page. IBTimes UK wrote about it first on October 3, and IGN, Forbes and Gamereactor followed within a day.
One thing on the card confuses people. Both lines, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, show 02/10/2026. That’s the European way of writing October 2, the date of the database entry. It isn’t a release date. GTA 6 still comes out on November 19.
What the PEGI description said
PEGI writes a short plain-language note for big releases, and that note is where the news was. In the description PEGI published and then removed, according to the outlets that quoted it (a roundup of the coverage, one more retelling), it said:
- the violence is bloody and very realistic, and some weapons do heavier damage, with detailed decapitation and dismemberment;
- drug use is frequent and prominent, with other characters or straight from your inventory, and you can carry cocaine and snort it off your hand at any moment;
- there is nudity, there are sex scenes, and occasionally scenes with fetishes;
- in clubs you can pay for a private dance and touch the dancer’s breasts and buttocks during it;
- animals can be hurt, but their injuries are less detailed than those on people;
- the language is rough, “fuck” and “cunt” included, and there are discriminatory remarks.
This isn’t an insider leak. It’s the regulator’s own text, and for a while it was public. Now we have it only through other people’s retellings, and IBTimes UK itself said it couldn’t check the wording against a live page because the listing had already been pulled. Why it came down, PEGI hasn’t said, and I won’t guess. The rating itself is still there.
PEGI, ESRB and Australia side by side
Three boards have now rated GTA 6, and each one describes the game in its own words:
| Board | Where | Rating | What it flags |
|---|---|---|---|
| PEGI | Most of Europe | 18 | Violence, Sex, Drugs, plus In-Game Purchases |
| ESRB | US and Canada | M for Mature 17+ | Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol, plus In-Game Purchases |
| Classification Board | Australia | R18+ | High impact violence, drug use and sex; strong themes, language and nudity |
The American list we went through line by line a few days ago, and it’s the same seven descriptors GTA V had.
The Australian rating is official, from the Classification Board, and it settles the story of the X 18+ label in a PlayStation ad: the game got R18+, the highest category a game can get there. The chart below is going around next to the news. It’s the Australian scale, not PEGI’s: six steps from none to high impact. On it GTA V reaches high impact only for drug use, Red Dead Redemption 2 sits at MA15+ for themes and violence, and GTA VI goes to high impact for violence, drug use and sex.
What’s actually new here
Every main GTA of the last twenty years has been an 18 in Europe, so the number tells you nothing. For a GTA, blood, drugs and strip clubs are normal. What’s new is how much detail each of those things now gets. GTA V had private dances too, and you could already touch the dancer when the bouncer looked away. The new part is what the PEGI text says about bodies.
As a tech artist, “detailed dismemberment” reads to me like a pile of work. A character has to be built so the mesh can split along prepared seams, every cut needs a cap that closes the wound, there are separate damage textures and blood decals, and once a limb comes off, physics has to treat it as its own object. In GTA V a shot to the head left a blood decal and a ragdoll, and nothing came apart. RDR2 already let dynamite take a body apart, so Rockstar has done this before, but only in a game with fewer people on screen. The line about animals I read as a budget decision more than a moral one: Leonida has a lot of species, and cutting every one of them into pieces would cost months.
For you, an 18 on the box means the usual. In many European countries shops won’t sell the game to anyone under 18, and console family settings can block PEGI 18 games on a child account. Italy is one of the PEGI countries, and our GTA 6 in Italy page has the local price and unlock time. Germany rates games through its own USK instead, and that story is on GTA 6 in Germany.
So that’s three boards, three age labels and one paragraph that won’t stay on its page. In November the strip club in Vice City will tell us which of those lines were accurate.
