GTA 6 in Germany: Price, USK Rating, Cuts and Unlock Time

In Germany the most recognisable part of a GTA box has always been the red square in the corner. GTA 6 costs €79.99, or €99.99 for the Ultimate Edition, unlocks at midnight on November 19 and comes with German subtitles and menus. The red USK 18 sticker is the one formality still on its way, and nobody is betting on another colour.

What it costs in Germany, Austria and Switzerland

Before June the German forums were preparing for €100, some for €120. The real number is €79.99 for the Standard Edition and €99.99 for the Ultimate. Eighty euros is still a lot for one game. For a game I’ve been waiting thirteen years for, I can live with it.

Two things are worth knowing before you pay. Standard is not a final decision: the upgrade to Ultimate can be bought at any moment after launch, for the same €20 difference. And the price moves. On August 24, right at Gamescom, Amazon cut the boxed Standard Edition to €63.20, and a few days later it was back near €79.99. The pre-order bonus is valid for any pre-order and any digital purchase through November 20, so you have time to catch the next dip.

The box without a disc

The boxed version exists only as the Standard Edition, and inside the case there is a download code and no disc. MediaMarkt, Saturn, Amazon and Otto all carry it. The Ultimate Edition lives only in the PlayStation Store and the Microsoft Store.

There is a very German detail here. A USK 18 title can only be handed to an adult in person, so most retailers add about €5 for age-verified delivery. Picking the box up in the shop on launch day saves you the fee, and you get to stand in a midnight queue like it’s 2013 again.

USK 18: the sticker that’s running late

Open GTA 6 in the German PlayStation Store and the rating line still says «Einstufung ausstehend». The USK usually rates big releases in the last weeks before launch, so the empty line is normal. GTA 5 carries «keine Jugendfreigabe», every modern GTA does, and all signs point the same way here.

A lot of people search for «GTA 6 FSK». The FSK rates films. Games in Germany are rated by the USK, so FSK 18 and USK 18 mean the same age and a different office.

Will the German version be cut?

Older players remember why this question exists. The German releases of GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas were trimmed: less blood, no cash dropping from pedestrians, the rampage missions gone. That era ended with GTA IV. It shipped uncut, GTA 5 did too, and an 18 rating is exactly what lets a full version through. Most likely you will play the same GTA 6 as Miami does.

German subtitles, English voices

German is one of the thirteen languages for subtitles and interface. The voices are English everywhere. Rockstar has never recorded a German dub, not for GTA, not for Red Dead Redemption, not for L.A. Noire. I understand the wish for a Synchro, German dubbing is some of the best in the world. But Vice City is built out of accents and radio chatter, and those don’t survive a recording booth in Berlin.

No PC version, and Germany feels it most

Germany is PC country, and GTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only. As someone who does optimisation for a living, I get the logic: two fixed consoles are a target you can polish until every reflection in a puddle holds its frame rate. A thousand PC configurations come later. It still hurts to watch from behind a high-end graphics card.

The German store listing shows 00:00 CET. Preload opens on November 12, a week earlier, so the download will be sitting on your console long before the countdown ends. Japan gets in eight hours before you and New Zealand twelve, which means spoilers will be everywhere by Wednesday evening — the full schedule is here.

Wednesday turns into Thursday, the download finished a week ago, the clock shows 00:00. Half of Germany will call in sick that morning. The other half will understand.
