GTA 6 in Japan: Price, CERO Rating, Cuts and the Earliest Launch

When midnight reaches Tokyo on November 19, it is four in the afternoon in Berlin and ten in the morning in New York, and Japan is already driving through Vice City. GTA 6 costs ¥9,800, or ¥12,280 for the Ultimate Edition, with Japanese subtitles and menus. The two questions every Japanese fan asks, about the CERO mark and about cuts, hang on the same review.

The price in yen

¥9,800 for the Standard Edition and ¥12,280 for the Ultimate. Converted to dollars, that’s one of the lowest official prices for GTA 6 anywhere in the world, well under the $79.99 the US pays. A weak yen is bad news for almost everything a Japanese player imports. Here, for once, it works in your favour.

The Ultimate Edition is digital only, and the upgrade from Standard stays on sale after launch.

CERO: what 審査予定 really means

Open GTA 6 in the Japanese PlayStation Store or on Xbox and the rating line says 審査予定, review scheduled. CERO itself explains the label: a publisher uses it to promote a game that is still in production. It says nothing about the result. Some Japanese retailers have already printed CERO Z on their listings, and that is where everything points, because every GTA sold in Japan has carried a Z.

Z means 18 and over, with an ID check at the counter.

“GTA 6 will be banned in Japan”

This one goes around social media every few weeks, and it doesn’t hold up for a minute. Pre-orders are open. The price is set. Take-Two Interactive Japan is shipping a boxed edition to the big retailers. A Z rating is an age category for selling a game to adults, the opposite of a ban.

The rumour has roots, though. In 2005 Kanagawa Prefecture designated GTA III as harmful to minors and restricted its sale, and the headline “GTA banned in Japan” has lived its own life ever since.

Will the Japanese version be cut?

Japanese releases of GTA have been adjusted before. In GTA 5 the sexual content was toned down, and the rest of Los Santos stayed as it was. Rockstar has never published a list of differences for a Japanese version, so the fans’ bet for GTA 6 is the same pattern: a handful of scenes filmed from a more modest angle, and a city nobody has touched.

The old escape route is gone. GTA 6 has no disc, so “import the American copy” doesn’t work any more. An overseas version now means an overseas account, an overseas code and overseas payment, and on PS5 the code is locked to the account region — the rules are on the region unlock page. It’s a lot of trouble to avoid a few camera angles.

The code that expires

This rule exists only in Japan. The download code inside a Japanese boxed copy stops working 170 days after launch, around May 8, 2027. Buy the box, redeem it the same day. A sealed copy kept “for later” will turn into an empty case.

Japanese subtitles, English voices

Japanese is one of the thirteen languages for subtitles and interface, and Trailer 2 already came out with Japanese subtitles. The audio is English in every country. No GTA has ever been dubbed, and a story that starts with Lucia in a prison interview room will be carried by how well those subtitles are written.

First in line

Only New Zealand and Australia get GTA 6 before Japan, by four hours and by two. Europe waits eight more hours and New York fourteen. Usually Japan wakes up to spoilers from the West. This time the spoilers come from Tokyo — the full list of unlock times has the rest.

Boxed copies are delivered on November 12, the day preload opens. After that there’s a week with the game on the console and nothing to do with it.

Then Tokyo at midnight, neon outside the window and neon on the screen. For a few hours the rest of the world will be watching Japan play.
