GTA 6 pre-orders are closing on five million — and nearly 90% of buyers picked the $100 Ultimate Edition

By Alex · Published

The interesting number isn't the five million. It's that almost nobody bought the cheap one — and that tells you more about the next two months than any sales chart.

Sensor Tower’s estimates have GTA 6 pre-orders approaching five million units, up from roughly 4.4 million in mid-August, with the jump arriving after the 27-minute An Extended Look showcase on August 27. The same analysis puts pre-order revenue somewhere near half a billion dollars before a single copy has shipped.

The number worth staring at is the split. The $99.99 Ultimate Edition accounts for close to 90% of those pre-orders. For context, Sensor Tower’s own framing is that premium editions of major games typically land somewhere between 10% and 20% of pre-orders, and a 50% share would already be considered a strong result.

Why the split matters more than the total

Twenty dollars separates the two editions. Across roughly four million buyers choosing the expensive one, that gap alone is worth something in the neighbourhood of $80 million — money that exists purely because the cheaper option didn’t feel like a real option to most people.

That’s the part that’s hard to fake. A record pre-order total mostly measures how famous a game is. An edition split measures how little hesitation there is in the room. When nine out of ten people skip the version that saves them money, they aren’t weighing a purchase — they’ve already decided, and the only remaining question is which box gets ticked.

The platform breakdown reads the same way: PS5 takes about 77% of pre-orders against 23% on Xbox Series, which is a wider gap than the installed bases alone would suggest.

Take-Two won’t put a number on it

Take-Two hasn’t confirmed any of this. On the company’s August earnings call, CEO Strauss Zelnick called the level of pre-orders “unprecedented and astonishing” and said they had “vastly” beaten internal forecasts — then declined to give a figure at all, explaining that the demand is so far outside precedent that the company doesn’t know how it will translate into actual sales.

That’s a more careful position than it first appears. Pre-orders are refundable, and a five-month gap between opening them and the November 19 release is a long time to hold a reservation. Zelnick is declining to bank a number he might have to walk back.

For now, everything above is analyst estimation rather than published fact — Sensor Tower models storefront data, it doesn’t receive it. Treat the shape of the finding as solid and the decimal places as provisional.
