On October 8 Rockstar put the first six GTA 6 radio stations on the game’s website, each with a short preview you can play right now. Flash FM, the pop station from 2002’s Vice City, is back. The other five are new, and the hosts read like a festival poster: Bad Bunny, Lana Del Rey, Morgan Wallen, Robyn, Burna Boy and two members of Slayer. Rockstar also confirmed something nobody had asked for and everybody will use: the radio now plays on foot, through headphones.
The six stations and who hosts them
| Station | What it plays | Hosts (voiced by) |
|---|---|---|
| Flash FM | Pop, “the best in pop” | Robyn and Alex (Robyn, model Alex Consani) |
| Cocoteo FM | Modern Latin: bachata, merengue, dembow, reggaeton | El Martillo and La Gata (Bad Bunny, RaiNao) |
| Back Country Radio | “Renegade” country | MW and Delta Dawne (Morgan Wallen, Lana Del Rey) |
| The Chamber 106.6 | Metal from the 80s and beyond | DJ Kerry and DJ Tom (Kerry King and Tom Araya of Slayer) |
| AfroBank FM | African music, from 20th-century classics to amapiano and 3-step | Burna and Palmsy (Burna Boy, Palms Trax) |
| Dirty South Classics | Regional rap and hip-hop classics | Trick and Trina (Trick Daddy, Trina) |
The line-up comes from Rockstar’s station pages, with the voice casting reported by Consequence and Kotaku.
Back Country Radio has the best supporting cast. Its station broadcasts to the Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn and beyond, and it has a third voice: Mud Dog Mike, played by Jeremy Dufrene, Lana Del Rey’s husband. Rockstar describes him as “Back Country’s roving reporter, swamp meteorologist, and Delta’s not-so-secret lover”, and he checks in from an airboat. Dirty South Classics is the most local casting on the list: Trick Daddy and Trina are Miami rap, so the station that plays the South is hosted by the South.
Radio on foot, and podcasts for the first time
Until now GTA radio lived in the car. In GTA 6, Jason and Lucia can keep a station or a podcast going through headphones or earbuds connected to their phones, on foot as well as behind the wheel. The podcasts are new too: they’re on demand, the first in the series, so a talk show no longer starts from wherever the broadcast happens to be.
That changes how you’ll move through Leonida more than any single song. A walk through Vice City’s nightlife with Flash FM in your ears is a different walk from the same street with the city’s own noise.
Flash FM and the rest of the dial
Flash FM is the only name here that came back from 2002, when it was one of nine stations alongside V-Rock, Emotion 98.3 and Fever 105. None of those three are among today’s six, and Rockstar showed only part of the dial, so the radio page keeps the list of what’s confirmed and what’s still a guess. The songs that are already known, from the trailers to the GTA VI album, are collected on the soundtrack page.
What I’m stuck on as a tech artist is the station art. A coconut with a face for Latin pop, a burning skull with a chain for metal, a gold grill for southern rap: every station has its own look, and none of them copies another. Rockstar treats a radio logo the way it treats a storefront in the game, as a small piece of the world that should make you believe in it.
New screenshots on the same day
With the stations Rockstar also posted new screenshots of the game: a highway packed with traffic on the way into Vice City, and two night streets in neon.
On November 19 the wheel will have more than six names on it. For now, put on the Flash FM preview and look at that highway: it’s the first time GTA 6 has had a soundtrack and a road at the same moment.
