By Somebody on X lined up the dates this week, and the thing has been staring at us the whole time. August 27: An Extended Look on Netflix and the press previews. September 3: two GTA 6 DualSense controllers, black and white with a pearlescent purple centre, revealed at State of Play. September 10: pre-orders for those controllers open at 10am local time, $84.99, shipping November 19. All three are Thursdays. Tomorrow is a Thursday.
I don’t think Rockstar has a Thursday rule written on a whiteboard. Marketing plans run on slots, and slots land where the press cycle works best, which in the games business has meant Thursday for a decade. But three in a row is enough for the community to start setting alarms, and honestly I’m setting one too.
What makes this week different is yesterday’s wave: a dozen artists posting GTA 6 art on the same day. Look at Travis Scott’s caption again and the first two words are “Phase 1”. He isn’t teasing a song, he’s numbering a campaign. TGG, who sat in on the Rockstar preview, put it plainly: he feels an even bigger announcement coming, and music looks like a bigger part of GTA 6 than ever.
Here is my read as someone who has watched these marketing runs from the inside of a studio. Controllers and pre-orders are the warm-up: retail beats that can be scheduled a year out. Artists posting in one coordinated burst are not a warm-up. That’s the noise you make right before you drop the thing itself, and for a game set in Vice City the thing itself is probably the radio.
Two months and three days to launch. If the pattern holds, we find out tomorrow. And if nothing comes, I’ll feel slightly stupid, refresh anyway, and see you here next Thursday.
