The detail in GTA 6's seaplane clip that most people missed — and why it's the physics argument in one frame

By Alex · Published

You can fake a big explosion. You can't fake spray leaving a propeller in the right direction unless the water is actually being simulated.

TGG, one of the creators who have spent the most hours with the preview build, made a claim that sounds like hype until you look at his example: the physics in GTA 6 is the most detailed the industry has produced. His evidence is a few seconds of the seaplane sequence.

Watch the propeller. As the plane sits on the water, the wash from the blades throws spray outward in every direction — not a canned splash under the hull, but droplets leaving the prop and scattering where the airflow would actually push them. It’s small enough that at normal speed you won’t notice it at all.

Why a detail nobody sees is the point

Big effects are cheap to fake. An explosion is a particle system and a sound; nobody checks whether the debris obeys physics. Propeller spray is different: to get it right, the water surface has to react to airflow, the droplets have to inherit that force, and the whole thing has to hold up when the player angles the plane. You only build that if the underlying water simulation is real, because there’s no cheaper way to arrive at it.

That’s what makes this frame a better argument than any bullet point. A feature list says “advanced water physics”. A prop throwing spray sideways is the water physics being caught doing its job when it didn’t know anyone was watching.

The part TGG leaned on hardest: this is raw gameplay footage, with no processing or added effects. What the prop does on screen is what the engine does on a PS5.

The caveat

One creator, one clip, one reading. TGG’s broader claim — that nothing in the industry matches this — is opinion, the kind that ages badly the moment someone posts a counter-example. The spray itself is on screen for anyone to check; the superlative is his. Our own breakdown of what the engine is demonstrably doing lives on the graphics tech page.
