Leonida is a state defined by water — a coastline on two sides, the Keys strung along a causeway, an Everglades of channels and sawgrass, and a hurricane season on top. That makes water the system GTA 6 cannot cheat on. The trailers show four different kinds of it: open ocean with breaking surf at Ocean Beach, calm shallows with boat wakes on the Keys, swamp water that airboats push through in Grassrivers, and rain-lashed sea under storm skies. Each is a different simulation problem, and this page reads what the trailers reveal about how Rockstar solves them. The weather itself — hurricanes, floods, what they do to gameplay — is on the weather page.

Water type Where What the trailers show Likely technique Confidence
Open ocean Ocean Beach, Gulf coast Rolling swell, breaking surf, foam Spectral (FFT) ocean plus shoreline foam Speculation
Shallows Leonida Keys Clear water, sand visible, boat wakes Depth-based colour, wake buffer Speculation
Swamp Grassrivers Airboats parting reeds, murky water Interactive ripple buffer, foliage interaction Speculation
Storm sea Coast in weather Dark, choppy, rain on the surface Wind-driven spectrum, rain ripples Speculation
Reflections Sunset sea, wet asphalt Sky and buildings held at the frame edge Ray-traced reflections Confirmed

The ocean at Ocean Beach

Open ocean in games is usually a spectral simulation: the surface is built from many overlapping waves generated by a Fourier transform, which gives a convincing swell that repeats far enough away that you never notice. Trailer 1 and 2’s beach shots show the harder part — the last thirty metres, where swell turns into breaking surf, foam and the thin film that runs up the sand. Shoreline is where most ocean systems fall apart, because breaking waves are not a spectrum, they are a separate effect matched to depth. The trailers show foam lines and wash that follow the beach’s shape, which means Rockstar built the shoreline as its own layer rather than letting the open-ocean sim run into the sand.

The Keys: clear water and wakes

The Keys shots are about transparency. Shallow water over sand shows the bottom, shifts from turquoise to deep blue with depth, and carries caustics — the moving light patterns sunlight makes through waves. That is depth-based colouring plus refraction, and it only looks right when the seabed underneath is real geometry. On top of it, boats. A wake is a record of where a hull has been, and the trailers show wakes that persist and spread rather than vanishing behind the boat — a wake buffer written into the water surface and left to decay, the technique RDR2 used for rivers, scaled up. Fishing, boating, kayaking and scuba diving are all confirmed activities, so this water is played on and in, not just looked at.

Grassrivers: water you push through

Swamp is the opposite problem. Grassrivers water is opaque, shallow and full of things — reeds, sawgrass, roots, alligators — and an airboat has to interact with all of them. The trailers show airboats parting vegetation and throwing spray, which means two-way interaction: the water surface reacts to the hull, and the foliage reacts to the water and the wind from the fan. That is an interactive ripple buffer plus foliage displacement, and the challenge is doing it for a vehicle that can cover the swamp at fifty miles an hour.

Storms and rain

A Florida storm changes water three ways at once: the wind spectrum drives the sea into steep, dark chop; rain textures the surface with rings; and everything on land turns wet, which is a material change rather than a water effect. The trailers’ storm shots — dark sea under a low sky, rain on windshields and skin — show all three. Rain on glass in particular is a small effect with a large cost, because the drops have to refract what is behind them and stream with the vehicle’s motion. The weather page covers what storms do to the world; here the point is that water and weather share one system, and the lighting that darkens under a storm is the same atmosphere the sea reads its colour from.

Reflections and what lies under the surface

Water is the biggest reflective surface in the game, and the ray-tracing question from the lighting page bit hardest here. Screen-space reflections cannot show what is off-screen or behind the camera; a sunset sea in Trailer 2 reflects sky and buildings that a screen-space method would lose at the frame edge. An Extended Look settled it: reflections are ray-traced on a base PS5, which is why the sea holds its sky when the camera turns away from it.

Underwater got its answer too. Scuba diving is on the confirmed activity list, so the murky green of the swamp and the blue of the Keys from below are both places you will actually be — a separate rendering mode with fog, light shafts and its own set of shaders. What has not been shown is what is down there: wrecks along the Keys and the Gulf are still a fan expectation rather than a demonstrated thing.

FAQ

How realistic is the water in GTA 6? The trailers show four kinds — open ocean with breaking surf, clear Keys shallows with boat wakes, swamp water airboats push through, and storm seas — each with different behaviour, rendered in-game on a PS5.

Can you swim and dive in GTA 6? Yes to both — scuba diving is on the activity list Rockstar showed. What is down there, wrecks included, has not been shown yet.

Do boats leave wakes in GTA 6? Yes — the Keys shots in the trailers show persistent wakes that spread and fade behind boats.

How do airboats work in GTA 6? Airboats are a confirmed activity in the Grassrivers swamps; the trailers show them parting vegetation and throwing spray as they go.

Does rain affect the water in GTA 6? Storm shots show dark, choppy sea and rain on the surface and on glass. Water and weather share one atmosphere system.
