It’s the last big print story before the November 19 release, and it’s free to read online at GamesRadar+. Below is everything new it confirmed, sorted by topic, with the screenshots made for the issue. What came before it, from hurricanes to 170+ animal species, is in our page on the Game Informer cover story.
What Edge published
Edge is a British magazine that has covered games since 1993, and its team went to Edinburgh for this one. The main voice of the feature is Aaron Garbut, co-head of Rockstar North and the person who has led the look of Rockstar’s worlds since GTA III. The issue carries 12 new screenshots and a double-sided gatefold cover with Jason and Lucia. The paper edition is sold in shops and through Edge subscriptions.
| Topic | What Edge reported |
|---|---|
| Map | The north of Leonida opens fairly early, without strict story gates |
| Transport | Bus and rail networks; Scooter Bros deliver your car to you |
| Weather | Wind, humidity, fog and seasons; a longer day than in GTA V |
| Cars | Quick refuelling, stolen cars that can give you away, the WAINK app |
| Characters | Jason and Lucia react to their surroundings; coffee and protein shakes |
“A pyramid on Everest”
Garbut’s most quoted line is about expectations. He compared making GTA 6 to building a pyramid on top of Everest: the game had to stand on the highest point the series had already reached and still go up. He also said the team hasn’t cut back on scale or detail to get there, and that even now he keeps finding places in Leonida he didn’t know about.
That last part is worth a second look. The person who has been building this world for years still runs into unfamiliar corners, which tells you how much hand-made content is in it. Edge reports that the game has an order of magnitude more interiors than previous Rockstar games, all of them built by hand.
The north opens early
The biggest gameplay news is about freedom. According to Edge, you can head out to explore the north of Leonida relatively early, without being tied to a strict sequence of story missions. After the opening, the map isn’t locked behind bridges or roadblocks the way Liberty City was in GTA IV: you won’t be stuck in Vice City for the first ten hours unless you want to be. The regions themselves are on our map of Leonida.
Buses, trains and a car that comes to you
Leonida has working bus and rail networks, so public transport is part of the world rather than scenery. The more useful novelty is Scooter Bros: a service that brings your own car right to you, with the weapons you keep in its trunk still inside. If you’ve ever walked half a map back to a parked car in GTA V, you’ll understand why this matters.
Refuelling exists but stays out of the way. Filling up takes very little time, and a full tank lasts a long while, so fuel is a detail, not a chore. Stealing cars has a new risk: some stolen vehicles can give your location away to the police.
WAINK and the car trade
Through the in-game app WAINK you can look up cars that dealers want, find them in the world and bring them in for a reward. The pay depends on the condition of the car, so a careful drive back is worth real money. The full list of confirmed vehicles is on our vehicles page.
Weather, seasons and a longer day
The dynamic weather system tracks wind, humidity and fog, and the world goes through seasons. The day and night cycle is longer than in GTA V, so sunsets and nights last more than a few minutes. How this connects with the hurricanes Game Informer reported is on our weather page. The sea isn’t empty either: one of the new screenshots shows a hammerhead shark over a reef, in line with the wildlife we already knew about.
Jason and Lucia feel the world
Jason and Lucia react to what’s around them in a believable way. Edge’s example is a small one: walk into a room that smells bad and they wince. Jason can drink coffee for stamina and protein shakes for health, which turns everyday stops into small upgrades. Other details of the world’s reactions are collected on our world detail page.
As a technical artist, I’d point out that the screenshots back this up. Look at the faces: the skin, the squint, the tension in the jaw. That level of facial animation is what lets a grimace at a smell read as a reaction rather than a canned animation.
