Remember how Rockstar used to show gameplay? Red Dead Redemption 2 got tidy videos with a narrator explaining every frame. An Extended Look threw all of that out: almost twenty-seven minutes, and it’s game all the way through. No host, no developer faces, no “here’s the story” inserts.
Rob Nelson’s explanation is simple: the game wasn’t going to fit anyway. “We can’t possibly introduce every element of the game in a short amount of time or through trailers alone,” he told Famitsu. Mechanics, details, the scale of the world — a whole pile of it stayed off camera so the video wouldn’t stretch even further.
I’ve put showreels together, and the usual logic runs the other way: interviews and voiceover are what you add when there isn’t enough polished footage to fill the runtime. Rockstar threw out the interviews to fit more game in, and still had to cut. To me that says more about the size of GTA 6 than any number. Although there is a number too: Nelson told The New York Times his own run through the story and its side missions took around 80 hours.
What exactly didn’t fit, we’ll be finding out for ourselves — after release, on the street, by accident. Somewhere in that off-camera pile are mechanics we don’t even know we should be waiting for. More and more I think the best part of the show is the one they didn’t show us.
